Women in Construction

We recently celebrated Women in Construction week. NAC is grateful for our Women in Construction. Katherine Murphy and Tammy Gillette are out in the field on a weekly basis inspecting buildings. We are so fortunate to have these extraordinary women working hard for us and contributing to the success of Natura Architectural Consulting.

Equal Pay

Based on the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2016 report on annual median earnings for full-time, year-round workers, full-time female employees made 80.2% of their male counterparts. Women in all industries are still fighting to earn equal pay for equal work; based on data from the same 2016 report the gender wage gap for women within the construction industry is smaller than in other industries. Excitingly, the report found that architectural or engineering managers, Natura Architectural Consulting’s industry, made 100% compared to their male counterparts.  Despite this fantastic success for gender pay equity, women still only account for 9.3% of construction employees while women make up 46.8% of total employment across all industries.

Visibility of Women

The women at NAC are grateful to contribute to the visibility of women in the industry and pave the way for younger women to join us and increase the number of women who participate in the construction process. There are many industries that lack gender equality in employment numbers. Frequently being in the field, it is apparent that female on-site workers are scarce, and women are underrepresented in the industry at large. Construction is an industry that has been considered traditionally male. Despite this, the women at NAC have commented on how the men in the field and in the office are not only respectful, but they are excited to have more women involved in the process; the more experience that is in the room, the faster that problems can be solved. Nothing contributes to problem solving more effectively than different points of view.

The women at Natura are held to the same standards as their male counterparts. As we continue to put work in, it creates an easier path for the younger women who will join us later on. As time passes and more women complete higher education courses or professional certification courses, we will see more women on-site and in meetings. We all have a role in welcoming more women into the workforce, regardless of industry.
